Our mattresses use Wool as the flame retardant

Wool is a naturally flame-resistant substance, which is used in many products for fire safety. Many factors contribute to wool’s adversity to combustion. It owes its natural flame-retardant ability in part to its unique structure. Wool fibers are covered by microscopic scales that hold them together tightly. This environment allows very little oxygen into wool, and therefore makes it a poor environment for fires. Another reason for wool’s natural flame-resistant properties is that when natural wool burns, it does so slowly, smoldering, and releasing little heat, rather than lending itself to big flames.

Wool has many other benefits besides being a flame retardant. Wool is a renewable resource unlike other synthetic materials being used in conventional mattresses. Wool can be produced without the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides, and it is biodegradable making it an environmentally friendly choice for mattresses, toppers, and bedding. The fibers of wool are naturally crimped, which creates millions of pockets of trapped air. These small pockets act as an insulator that will keep your body warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Your mattress will be comfortable to you whether you’re a hot or cold sleeper. Wool is a natural moisture wicking material. It can absorb moisture away from the skin, and into the fibers of the wool keeping the sleeping surface of the mattress dry benefiting people who tend to sleep hot or sweat at night.

Wool is also hypoallergenic making it an excellent choice for people with allergies or asthma. The fibers of wool contain a waxy substance called lanolin. Lanolin makes wool resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew. A mattress using wool as the fire retardant is less likely to harbor allergens that can cause an allergic reaction. The manufacturers the Natural mattress Company represent raise their sheep in humane and ethically responsible ways. They use all natural and biodegradable cleaning methods to prepare the wool making it good for you the consumer, the local environment, and the sheep themselves.

You can find many of our wool products including mattresses, toppers, pillows, and comforters on our website.

Why purchase organic cotton bedding?

Why should you purchase organic cotton bedding?

Organic cotton bedding is free from flame retardants, formaldehydes, and other harsh chemicals. Because organic cotton isn’t processed with harsh chemicals and detergents, it is safe for sensitive skin. It is also a great choice for individuals with allergies. Purchasers will not have a reaction to the chemicals or dyes. Many synthetic sheets use wrinkle resistant treatments that release formaldehydes.

Organic cotton bedding is more breathable than bedding made with synthetics that can trap heat leaving you feeling hot and sweaty. Organic cotton bedding is stronger because chemical processing in conventional cotton sheets weaken the fibers. This can cause sheets to pill more quickly. Organic Cotton has longer fibers that make the fabric very soft to the touch. Organic cotton is not stripped of its natural wax due to chemical processing. This gives the bedding a smoothness and causes it to drape nicely.

Organic Cotton uses less water than conventional cotton without the harmful pesticide’s, which makes it better for the planet and the soil. It is estimated that organic cotton uses 71-91% less irrigation and 62% less energy. Organic cotton gets 80% of its water from rainfall, so the organically grown crop puts a lot less pressure on local water sources. No pesticides or fertilizers are used, so these potentially harmful substances don’t run into local water sources leaving them cleaner and safer. Pesticides are not only harmful to the pests they are meant to ward off but also the humans that apply them. With GOTS certified cotton, workers are fairly treated, by receiving a livable wage and not being over worked.  Organic cotton farming can help the biodiversity, soil, and keep wildlife safe in the areas it is grown.

Organic cotton takes more time and requires more knowledge and skill top grow. For now, it costs more than many other options. Here at the Natural Mattress Company, we think it is worth it.

Different Organic Latex Mattresses at The Natural Mattress Company VT

Organic Mattresses

The mattresses in my store are only made of a few materials. It keeps my job simple. Organic latex from the sap of the rubber tree, organic cotton covers and wool. The wool is being used as the fire retardant. Some of our mattresses are all latex, while others contain latex and springs. Most of the mattresses ship roll packed, which is very convenient for shipping purposes. Others come in three boxes and you build the mattress when it comes.

Latex and Springs

Most of the hybrid latex and spring mattresses are returnable, if you decide you don’t like the mattress within a trial period, usually 90 to 100 days. Not a surprise but mattresses with springs tend to feel a little bit more bouncy. When you lay down, your body tends to stay more on top of the mattress. The springs make it not as responsive or sink in as an all latex mattress. Certainly, you don’t sink in as much as a memory foam. Latex and spring mattresses tend to be more affordable than all latex.

The cost does sometimes depend on the materials in the mattresses and the amount of those materials. Some of our higher end mattresses from Ivy Organics do have springs, and they are 15 to 17 inches in height, with lots of hand stitching. They contain a lot more wool and organic cotton which changes the feel of the mattress. The organic cotton is not being used as just the cover and the wool is not being used as just the fire retardant.

Some of the most popular latex and spring mattresses in my store are manufactured by Harvest and Ergovea. The mattress that has the most give is the Ergovea Pasadena Medium. It feels like the mattress is giving you a hug. On the other hand, the Pasadena firm is the firmest spring mattress in the store. The Harvest Original is a medium to medium firm mattress and should work well for most sleepers. The Harvest Pillowtop has some of the benefits of being a hybrid but also feels a little bit more like an all latex mattress. This is because the mattress has 4 inches of latex on top of the springs. The Harvest Essentials is the most budget friendly, and can be a great option if you like sleeping on a firmer surface.

All Latex Mattresses

Mattresses made out of all latex feel a little more dense with less bounce. The Savvy Rest Serenity has two different types of latex: Dunlop and Talalay. The Dunlop is a little firmer. Talalay latex is a little bit more sink in and great for pressure point relief. Talalay is the closest to memory foam. The Serenity is an adjustable latex mattress. You can have a different firmness on each side of the mattress, which makes this mattress very popular. If you get the mattress home and are unsatisfied with the overall comfort level, within 90 days you can do a latex exchange and just pay shipping. With the latex exchange, you can make the mattress firmer or softer. You can also change the order of the latex layers to make the mattress firmer. Both Talalay and Dunlop can come in soft, medium or firm. There are 3 layers of latex in each mattress. Each layer is 3 inches thick.

We have two all latex mattresses from Ergovea on our showroom floor. The Madera is the firmest all latex mattress, and the Valencia is the most plush. These two mattresses use Silica sand for the fire retardant instead of wool. Without the wool, the cover is thinner and stretchy but still durable. It gives the mattresses a different feel, as if you are laying directly on the latex.

We also carry OMI! The Duo is similar to the Savvy Serenity in that is has 3 layers of latex, however it has a sculpted top. Omi’s signature sculpted surface adds pressure-point relief, added comfort with softness and additional air circulation. The Palera is a medium firm flippable mattress, which features the sculpted top on one side, or a firmer flat latex side on the other. If you add an OMI 3.5 inch topper on to the Palera it becomes the Pinnacle, a very luxurious feeling mattress. Just like sleeping on a cloud!

To find out which type of latex mattress is best for you, please feel free to give us a call, send us a text, or better yet if you are in the area stop by the store!

Best Options for Organic Mattress Toppers

At the Natural Mattress Company VT, we sell three different types of mattress toppers: latex, wool and cotton. Each one of these options will have different benefits.

Toppers in general, add a touch of pillowy, cradling comfort to your mattress. They can be used to alleviate hip, shoulder and back pain if your mattress is too firm. They can also extend the life of your current mattress. If you have purchased a foam mattress and are having trouble with temperature regulation (sleeping hot)! A topper made with natural breathable materials can provide the perfect barrier between you and your memory foam mattress that may be retaining heat.

Natural latex toppers will increase the softness of your mattress while providing pressure point relief and additional support. The topper will contour your body and have a spongier feeling then a wool topper. Latex toppers can vary in firmness and type of latex. Talalay latex is softer than Dunlop. Latex toppers come in different thicknesses such as 2 or 3 inch. If you are looking to drastically change the feel of your mattress you may want to opt for a 3 inch Talalay topper. If you would just like to add a little bit more softness a 2 inch Dunlop topper should suffice. Latex is very durable and a topper can last 10 years or more.

Wool toppers are similar to putting a traditional pillow top on your mattress. Sort of like a thicker blanket that will hold up longer over time. It will add some softness and make your mattress more cozy. Wool has a fluffier feel as opposed to latex which feels more spongy. Wool toppers do tend to compress quicker than latex, however they are at a lower price point. You can add to the life of your topper by flipping and rotating on a regular basis. Just like latex toppers, wool topper can come in different thicknesses. The thicker the topper, the more it will changing the feel of your mattress. A thicker topper will last longer, as it will not compress as quickly. Deciding which topper is best for you depends on how much you want to change the feel of your mattress to a fluffier feel, as opposed to a a conventional mattress which will have more bounciness.

Organic Cotton toppers provide similar benefits to one made out of wool. The cotton topper will most likely feel a little firmer and may not compress as quickly as wool. It is still a good idea to flip and rotate a cotton topper to extend the toppers life.

Mattress toppers are usually not a good option if your current mattress has a dip. They could provide a little extra comfort but will not disguise the dip. If the mattress is dipping to much, it is probably time to replace the mattress, instead of buying a topper.

Latex is usually produced is Southeast Asia, where as both wool and cotton toppers can be made through materials grown in the USA. All three toppers can provide the health benefits of sleeping on natural breathable materials that are non-toxic and can alleviate pain caused by sleeping on a mattress that is not a good fit for you. Usually a mattress that is too firm. Although the toppers tend to make your mattress softer, they still will provide good support.

Take a look at some of the toppers we offer on our website.

What is Talalay Latex?

Talalay latex is one of the most luxurious mattress materials. Not only does it offer great pressure relief, it is extremely durable and very comfortable. Talalay latex is a natural product that is biodegradable. What are the benefits of Talalay latex and how does it compare to Dunlop latex and memory foam?

What is Talalay Latex?

Talalay latex is a type of natural latex. It is known for gently cradling shoulders and hips as you sleep on your side, but any kind of sleeper can benefit. Talalay is also very breathable due to its open cell structure. It is a great material for those who tend to sleep hot. Since Talalay is a natural latex, it does not off gas harmful chemicals. If health and material purity are important to you, Talalay latex would be a fine non toxic choice for your mattress or topper.

Talalay versus Dunlop

Talalay and Dunlop are two types of natural latex, but they differ in feel and in terms of the manufacturing process. Talalay is best and most responsive for those that sleep on their side, while Dunlop is the denser of the two types of latex and offers incredible support. If you like the best of both worlds, you can choose Talalay as your top comfort layer and Dunlop for the two base layers. This will give the mattress an overall firmer feel then an all Talalay mattress.

Talalay has extra steps in the manufacturing process. As the latex is poured into the mold, it is vacuumed sealed and flash frozen before being baked. This gives Talalay the open cell structure and an overall more consistent feel than Dunlop. Because of the extra steps, Talalay is a little more expensive then Dunlop. However, with Dunlop you can simply flip the layer over to receive a firmer feel to your mattress. Talalay’s density is consistent so you do not have that flexibility.

Talalay versus Memory Foam

Talalay and memory foam both offer great pressure point relief, however there are a few major differences between these two mattress cores. Talalay latex is a natural material that is harvested from the sap of the rubber tree. Memory foam is a chemically manufactured man made product. Talalay is an eco-friendly healthy material that doesn’t sacrifice comfort.

Memory foam is comfortable at first, but it is a chemical reaction from your body heat and the foam that allows it to conform to your body’s curves. Not only is there the potential feeling of overheating while you try to sleep, but eventually memory foam might have trouble bouncing back. This will lead to dips and sags in the mattress instead of long lasting pressure point relief.

Is Talalay Latex Natural?

Yes, Talalay latex is natural. We recommend avoiding polyurethane foam and memory foam mattresses if you wish to have a natural mattress.

What is the best Talalay Mattress?

The best Talalay mattress is made from the highest quality natural latex that is both comfortable and safe. We offer Talalay mattresses from Savvy Rest here at The Natural Mattress Company. Savvy Rest uses Vita Talalay from Radium Foam, which is known for its material purity and durability. It is Cradle to Cradle GOLD certified and made using sustainable forestry practices. Savvy Rest is currently the only mattress manufacturer to offer GOTS-certified organic mattresses with Talalay latex.

How To Find Rest During A Restless Time

As countries close borders, businesses shut down, and quarantine continues, these stressful times begin to take a toll on our bodies. Anxiety and stress has been proven to lower the immune system and increase the risk of high blood pressure or heart attack. Amidst all of this, sleep is often overlooked as a way to help the body recover and overcome these obstacles. But finding sleep can be difficult. While you may be struggling to fall asleep during these troublesome times, there are a few methods and products that may be able to help you to get a better night’s rest:

Take a Sip

There’s a reason behind the warm milk before bed tale. A warm drink can often ease the body and release endorphins. A warm cup or milk or a mug of Chamomile Tea is all you might need to signal to your body, it’s time for bed. A glass or water can also be a positive bedtime routine!

Take Melatonin Supplements

A new and rising trend, melatonin can be found everywhere from your local pharmacy to Amazon. One pill or gummy in the evening and you’ll find falling asleep has never been easier. It’s all natural, good for the body, and is a positive signal to the brain for a long, happy night’s rest.

Kava Kava

If you don’t want to try melatonin, Kava Kava is another great option. You can buy it in powder or pill, and take a little before night. This herb has been proven to ease anxiety and boost sleep.

Mediation and Mindfulness

While sounding counterproductive, meditation or mindfulness are ways to actually handle and manage the thoughts in your head. By practicing, you will start to gather the tool set to be able to shut off your brain before bed, avoiding those late nights filled with stress!

Breath Exercises

Focusing on your breath also trains the brain to ignore the other thoughts in your head. Breathing exercises can be a positive way to center yourself and prepare for sleep.

Aromatherapy

In the age of diffusers, try using a lavender scent before bedtime. This calming scent is directly associated with instigating feelings of calm and sleepiness. Pro tip: try Silexan Lavender Oil.

While not all of these products or methods may work for you, a few of them may be able to help aid your journey with sleep. With a proper night’s rest, your immune system is proven to be stronger and you will be more prepared to handle whatever happens that day. From all of us here at the Natural Mattress Company, we wish you a good night’s rest and safe keeping. Remember to wash your hands, practice social distancing, and take a nap!

How to Overcome Mattress Phobia

Buying a mattress can be a daunting task. Mattresses do not come cheap and are decade long commitments for most. The majority of consumers put in a lot of research to their mattress company and specific model they want. But finally taking that leap of faith can be scary. Especially if your first night’s rest on your brand new mattress is not that life-changing experience you’ve been hoping for.

Here at Natural Mattress Company, we’ve come to tell you there’s no reason to be afraid. Mattresses, much like most new products, take breaking in. Your body needs time to adjust to the new bed and the mattress itself has to settle into the frame.

According to an article by Sleepadvisor.org, there are 8 tips to follow after buying your new mattress that will make the difference between your mattress nightmare and a good night’s sleep:

Let Your Mattress Breathe

Most mattresses need air flow, especially organic or natural mattresses. The latex needs to breathe. That’s why we sell coconut mats to lay between your mattress and the bed frame. These mats allow for circulation under the mattress and further provide support for the mattress. The best part: they’re all natural too!

Put on the Pressure

When first getting your mattress, you can try putting a lot of pressure dispersed throughout the mattress. This helps loosen the latex and potentially even soften your bed by introducing air flow. This may also help prevent any mattress imprint that could be made later by introducing pressure throughout the mattress, instead of in one place.

Be Patient

This advice has always been our favorite advice. Give your mattress some patience. That first night most likely will never be the best night. We advise people give their mattresses at least 30 days, sometimes even up to 90. Fun fact: that is why mattress warranties are often 90 days!

Warm It Up

Not the best advice, especially for natural mattresses. But if you’d like, some foam mattresses react well to a warmer temperature. However, latex does not mind the cold and most people do not like to sleep in hot bedrooms. Take this advice as you wish.

Sleep on It Consistently

Along with patience, you have to give your mattress its best shot. By doing this, you need to sleep on it every night for those 30 or 90 days. This is the fastest route to breaking it in.

Put It on the Right Foundation

The bed frame can be half the battle with mattresses. We encourage our customers to do research on the mattress to find the bed frame that will work best for it. Natural latex mattresses can often be very heavy. Because of this, we advise platform bed frames to properly support the mattress throughout.

Follow your Gut

No matter if you’re willing to put in the time, if the mattress isn’t right for you then don’t suffer. If you are worried about this, look into mattress companies like Savvy Rest that allow a latex exchange to better suit the mattress for your needs.

Give It the Full Time

Along with patience, try to give the mattress the full trial time recommended. Those 30 or 90 days may just change your life.

SleepAdvisor has got it right. Patience and time may just be the best way for you to overcome that mattress phobia. If you have any more questions or fears, feel free to give us a call and we’ll do our best to help. The Natural Mattress Company prides itself on putting customers first. We look forward to working with our customers as a team effort to find the mattress best suited for them. Swing by at any time to lay on one of mattresses or to just say hi. Our door is always open.
