The mattresses in my store are only made of a few materials. It keeps my job simple. Organic latex from the sap of the rubber tree, organic cotton covers and wool. The wool is being used as the fire retardant. Some of our mattresses are all latex, while others contain latex and springs. Most of the mattresses ship roll packed, which is very convenient for shipping purposes. Others come in three boxes and you build the mattress when it comes.

Latex and Springs

Most of the hybrid latex and spring mattresses are returnable, if you decide you don’t like the mattress within a trial period, usually 90 to 100 days. Not a surprise but mattresses with springs tend to feel a little bit more bouncy. When you lay down, your body tends to stay more on top of the mattress. The springs make it not as responsive or sink in as an all latex mattress. Certainly, you don’t sink in as much as a memory foam. Latex and spring mattresses tend to be more affordable than all latex.

The cost does sometimes depend on the materials in the mattresses and the amount of those materials. Some of our higher end mattresses from Ivy Organics do have springs, and they are 15 to 17 inches in height, with lots of hand stitching. They contain a lot more wool and organic cotton which changes the feel of the mattress. The organic cotton is not being used as just the cover and the wool is not being used as just the fire retardant.

Some of the most popular latex and spring mattresses in my store are manufactured by Harvest and Ergovea. The mattress that has the most give is the Ergovea Pasadena Medium. It feels like the mattress is giving you a hug. On the other hand, the Pasadena firm is the firmest spring mattress in the store. The Harvest Original is a medium to medium firm mattress and should work well for most sleepers. The Harvest Pillowtop has some of the benefits of being a hybrid but also feels a little bit more like an all latex mattress. This is because the mattress has 4 inches of latex on top of the springs. The Harvest Essentials is the most budget friendly, and can be a great option if you like sleeping on a firmer surface.

All Latex Mattresses

Mattresses made out of all latex feel a little more dense with less bounce. The Savvy Rest Serenity has two different types of latex: Dunlop and Talalay. The Dunlop is a little firmer. Talalay latex is a little bit more sink in and great for pressure point relief. Talalay is the closest to memory foam. The Serenity is an adjustable latex mattress. You can have a different firmness on each side of the mattress, which makes this mattress very popular. If you get the mattress home and are unsatisfied with the overall comfort level, within 90 days you can do a latex exchange and just pay shipping. With the latex exchange, you can make the mattress firmer or softer. You can also change the order of the latex layers to make the mattress firmer. Both Talalay and Dunlop can come in soft, medium or firm. There are 3 layers of latex in each mattress. Each layer is 3 inches thick.

We have two all latex mattresses from Ergovea on our showroom floor. The Madera is the firmest all latex mattress, and the Valencia is the most plush. These two mattresses use Silica sand for the fire retardant instead of wool. Without the wool, the cover is thinner and stretchy but still durable. It gives the mattresses a different feel, as if you are laying directly on the latex.

We also carry OMI! The Duo is similar to the Savvy Serenity in that is has 3 layers of latex, however it has a sculpted top. Omi’s signature sculpted surface adds pressure-point relief, added comfort with softness and additional air circulation. The Palera is a medium firm flippable mattress, which features the sculpted top on one side, or a firmer flat latex side on the other. If you add an OMI 3.5 inch topper on to the Palera it becomes the Pinnacle, a very luxurious feeling mattress. Just like sleeping on a cloud!

Back Pain and your Mattress

Do you experience back pain? A customizable latex mattress can help! There are three types of back pain: Nerve pain, pain caused by muscle spasms or pain caused by pressure point issues. Depending on the type of pain you have, our team here at the Natural Mattress company can help you pick the perfect customized mattress for you. If we didn’t hit the exact mark the first time, within 90 days you can do a latex exchange and make your mattress softer or firmer.

The most intense back pain is usually caused by pressure on the nerve. This can be from a disc problem or an old injury. It is possible you may experience sciatica, which is a sharp pain moving down the leg. In this case a firmer mattress is probably best to give support for your spine. However, there is no one mattress firmness fits all. What an individual considers firm can vary from person to person, so it is best to have flexibility with your mattress when dealing with back issues. One thing to keep in mind is a firm mattress is good for support, however a hard mattress may cause your body to not be able to relax which will cause stiffness and pain.

Back pain may also be caused by muscle spasms instead of a disc injury. You may experience this type of pain after working out to hard, or when waking up in the morning if your mattress is no longer supporting you correctly. If your back pain goes away after you move around a little or after your body warms up, muscle spasms could be the cause. If this is the type of back pain, you are experiencing feel free to choose a softer mattress if that is what you prefer.

A third kind of back pain is discomfort from pressure points caused by a hard, unyielding mattress. If you are a back sleeper, you may notice pain in your tail bone or base of the spine. If you sleep on your side, your shoulders or hips may ache. In this case, you may need a softer mattress. You can achieve this by adding a topper to your overly firm mattress, or if its time replace your current mattress opt for something softer. The Talalay latex Savvy Rest provides offers great pressure point relief. Omi has a structured wave layer. Ergovea has a stretchy thinner mattress cover that gives you a different take on a latex mattress.

How to decide how firm your latex mattress should be?

When choosing latex firmness for your mattress, you have the option to choose between soft, medium and firm. Some factors that can help you choose the best for your body are weight, sleep position, and personal preference.

So which firmness might be the best fit for me!

Soft latex mattress:

Soft latex mattresses typically work well for petit adults. Especially if they sleep on their side and they need pressure point relief. If a mattress is too firm it can cause hip or should pain. A soft mattress will gently cradle those pressure points.

Medium Latex Mattress:

A medium latex mattress is a more neutral density. Obviously, it is neither too soft nor too firm. Both side and back sleeps can rest comfortably on a medium firm mattress, especially if they are more of an average build and don’t have pressure point issues. A medium mattress is usually a good choice for a guest bed.

Firm Latex Mattress:

A firm latex mattress is best for back and stomach sleepers as if offers the most support. Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to avoid sinking into the latex. If the mattress does not offer enough support, it would cause a stomach sleeper’s back to arch.

Choosing your firmness:

Many of the mattresses we carry are customizable and offer latex layers. Examples are the Savvy Rest Serenity, Ergovea Valencia, and OMI Duo. With this type of mattress, the firmer layers should go on the bottom offering support. The softer layer should be on the top to offer comfort. These types of mattresses are a perfect fit, especially if you and your partner have different firmness preferences. The customizability of the mattress allows each person to get exactly what they want. Neither person has too compromise their comfort.

While we think you should absolutely choose our products, we understand that you might need a little bit more information than that.

Why are your mattresses more expensive than other mattresses?

It’s not secret that our mattresses are more expensive than companies such as My Green Mattress, Sleep EZ, and Avocado. But there are several reasons for this.

For one, our organic mattresses are completely GOTS-certified organic, from the cotton to the wool to the finished product as a whole. Our Serenity, Tranquility, Unity Pillowtop, SerenitySpring, and Pastoral mattresses are certified, as well as our manufacturing facility.

As you can imagine, all of our certifications come with a price tag, so our impressive resume also means that the cost of our product must be higher than those who have not met these standards. Sourcing organic materials is expensive but we believe the quality and peace of mind are worth every penny.

Our mattresses are also customizable for couples so you and your partner can have your own configurations without having to sacrifice comfort.

While a few other mattress companies have this option, it is not very popular in the online-only mattress industry.

To add to the customer experience, we’ve also made our products available to try out in stores. This makes the mattress buying process so much easier. You can figure out what you want in person instead of crossing your fingers and hoping what you ordered online works for you.

Dunlop latex is denser and more supportive than Talalay.

Talalay is softer and more pressure-relieving than Dunlop.

What is the difference between Dunlop and Talalay latex?

We offer two types of latex in our organic mattresses: Dunlop and Talalay. The main differences between the two are certifications and feel.

The Dunlop latex we use meets the requirements of GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard). It’s an overall denser and firmer latex than Talalay, offering stable support.

Talalay latex is Cradle to Cradle Gold and FSC-certified. It’s known for having a plush and luxurious feel that is excellent at pressure point relief. We usually recommend at least one layer of Talalay latex for side sleepers.

Savvy Rest is the only mattress company in the world with GOTS-certified organic mattresses containing Talalay latex.

When choosing your Savvy Rest configuration, you can opt for all Dunlop, all Talalay, or a combination of the two.

Is the Talalay in your organic mattresses GOLS certified?

No, there is currently no Talalay latex manufacturer that offers GOLS-certified Talalay. Our Talalay latex is Cradle to Cradle Gold and FSC-certified. It has also met testing requirements for GreenGuard Gold.

Does a Savvy Rest mattress last?

Yes. Longevity is just as important as safety when it comes to sourcing our organic materials.

Besides toxic off-gassing, a major difference between natural latex and memory foam is that memory foam mattresses retain your body heat which allows the mattress to conform to your body’s curves. Over time, the memory foam will have trouble bouncing back, leading to significant dips and sags.

Our latex mattresses are built to last and come with a 20-year limited warranty (the Earthspring has a 10-year limited warranty).

Cheaper mattresses are not designed with longevity in mind. We do not believe you should have to buy a new mattress every five years. It should be around for the long run.

How is Savvy Rest different from other mattress companies?

Besides offering completely GOTS-certified and customizable natural latex mattresses, we’re also both a B Corp and an employee-owned company.

What is a B Corp?

Our B Corp certification means that our business focuses on more than just profit. We also care about positively impacting our community and producing products that are natural and safe for the home (and the planet).

We’re proud of our partnership with American Forests, the nation’s oldest nonprofit conservation organization. When you purchase a Savvy Rest product on our website, we donate five trees through the Global ReLeaf program. We’ve donated thousands of trees!

We’ve also joined forces with local women’s shelters and created the Safe Sleep Pillow program. Savvy Rest has donated almost 3,000 pillows to women who have escaped dangerous home situations and are looking for a safe space before continuing their journey. After leaving the shelter, they can take the pillow with them. We know a pillow can’t save the world but we hope it brings comfort and healthy sleep to these brave women.

Do you have a return policy?

While online-only mattress companies allow returns, this is not possible with our organic products. The materials we source are expensive and we would not be able to resell a returned product due to health reasons (and the product would not longer meet organic requirements).

However, there is good news! We have a 90-Day Latex Exchange Policy for our mattresses that gives our customers peace of mind.

Let’s say you feel your mattress is too soft and want to switch out a layer of Soft Dunlop for Medium Dunlop. Just let us know and we’ll ship you the layer of latex and you’ll send us whichever layer you don’t want! It’s that easy.

Why does one size not fit all?

One size does not fit all because we are all different shapes and sizes. We all have different medical needs and injuries to take into account. We all sleep differently, whether on our back, side, or stomach. We need to embrace our differences and Savvy Rest does this by offering mattresses made for EVERYONE.

Customization means you get exactly what you want in order to get the healthy sleep you need.

You want a plush mattress? We’ve got that. You want something super firm? We’ve got that too. Prefer something in the middle? You guessed it–we’ve got it.

Your side of the mattress can even differ from your partner’s. No one should have to compromise comfort, especially when you’re spending top dollar for a quality mattress.

How does the mattress arrive?

Our mattresses are shipped via FedEx. The latex layers are rolled and placed into separate boxes.

The Harmony features Dunlop or Talalay latex in our certified organic cotton and wool casing. Like our layered mattresses, it is customizable and thus covered by our 90-Day Latex Exchange Policy.

The Vitality topper contains Soft Talalay latex only and is encased in a supple organic cotton fabric.

What is the difference between the Harmony and Vitality topper?

Both are natural latex toppers but there are three major differences: casings, customization, and warranties.

The Harmony has the same casing as our organic mattresses. It is fully customizable topper so you can select any type of latex you’d like. The Harmony comes with a 20-year limited warranty when used with a Savvy Rest mattress (3 years when not).

The Vitality has a 3-year limited warranty. The casing is an organic cotton jersey knit. It’s super stretchy so you can really feel the softness of the latex.

The Vitality comes with Soft Talalay latex. You may request a different density of Talalay or even opt for Dunlop but a fee of $100 will be added to your purchase. Please email us at [email protected], or call 866-856-4044 to request a custom Vitality.

Does natural latex smell?

This is a tricky question because everyone has a different sense of smell. Some people are incredibly sensitive to certain smells while others can barely smell anything.

Typically, you may smell the latex for a few nights. This does not mean that your mattress is off-gassing harmful chemicals. It’s simply the scent of the natural latex.

Some of our customers find that once the latex is encased for a period of time, the scent goes away. It’s that initial period right after you’ve moved the layers and assembled the mattress that you may smell the latex. For most, this is temporary and does not affect their sleeping experience.

If you are still concerned about smell, you may order a latex sample kit so you can see and touch the latex before purchasing. We recommend keeping the latex sample by your bed as you sleep.

Does linseed oil smell?

We offer several zero-VOC finishes for our furniture, one of which is linseed oil. We let our finishes dry on our platform beds for two days before they are boxed and shipped. This lets the stain breathe so smell should not be an issue.
